Les Gropp was piloting a 1947 Stinson single engine prop plane away from Bruce Meadows Airport in Stanley, Idaho on June 30th, 2012, but failed to gain enough altitude during the initial climb to clear the tree-tops. The airplane subsequently came down through the trees before impacting the ground inverted and sliding to a stop. Mr. Gropp did not file a flight plan but NTSB investigators say he was headed to the McCall Municipal Airport.

Certified commercial pilot Les Gropp sustained serious injuries, and the three passengers (Nathan Williams, Tol Gropp, and Alec Arhets) sustained minor injuries.
